５曲目の今回は「sing（シング）」と並んで英語の初心者の学習にうってつけの楽曲として「top of the world（トップ・オブ・ザ・ワールド）」をピックアップしました。
この楽曲は、
「come」「see」「get」「look」「find」「put」「tell」といった動詞のほかに
助動詞「will」
接続詞「that」
など英文法の理解を深めるための多くの単語があります。
この楽曲を和訳してみて気が付くのは、英語の和訳には動詞が最も重要な役割りを果たすことです。「トップ・オブ・ザ・ワールド」に限らず、会話でも頻繁に使われる動詞の和訳には、日本語の表現力も動員した能力が必要になると考えます。今回は男性の立場で和訳を進めましたが、オリジナルは女性の立場から和訳されており、英文法に忠実に和訳しようとするとどうしても一部がぎごちない日本語になってしまうことはご容赦ください。
動詞の時制は個別の単語ごとに「配慮」しなければなりません。この楽曲では、
「経験」「完了」を意味する現在完了形の事例が含まれます。
個人的には、完了形を理解することができれば英文法に関する知識は深まると考えます。
今回はまだ５曲目なので、個別の動詞の時制やニュアンスは多くの楽曲に触れてゆく中で少しずつ理解してゆきましょう。
重要なことは「楽しみながら」理解してゆくことです。

第5回．英語の時制
英語の「時制」は、理論上は１２種類に分類されると考えます。
内訳は、現在形、過去形、未来形に加え、それぞれの完了形（合計６種類）
さらに６種類の進行形を合計して１２種類です。
ただ、実際の会話での頻度を考えてみると、現在形、現在完了形、それぞれの進行形、過去形と過去進行形、未来形あたりの理解度が進めば、幅広い場面で会話を楽しむことができるはずです。今回取り上げた「トップ・オブ・ザ・ワールド」では、現在完了形の「経験」と「完了」の表現が登場します。経験は「したことがある」、完了は「（ちょうど／今まさに）～したところだ」と和訳されます。
学校で学んだばかりの諸君は完了形の文法に少し混乱するかも知れません。面倒なことは面倒なので「わからないこと」を気に病む必要はありません。スルーしてしまいましょう。英語の習得は長い道のりです。
たった一度の講義（授業）で知識を習得できるケースは稀で、知識の「定着」が
必要です。「定着」のためには「反復」作業が必要です。勉強が面倒なので歌の力が
諸君の知識の「定着」の助けになればうれしいと考えます。
