カーペンターズのスタンダードナンバー「closer to you」を取り上げてみました。
日本語と異なり英語にはジェンダー（性）の違いは意識的に拘りません。以前は「actor」と「actress」「waiter」「waitress」など性差を言葉で表現していましたが、最近では性差を表現する表現はひとつに標準化されつつあると思われます。私は男性の主観から和訳を進めています。ところで、英語を理解するためには「動詞」の和訳が重要です。歌詞に登場する「long」は前置詞「to」を伴って「思い焦がれる／憧れる／切望する」といった意味を持ちます。
